Switcher board for Apple II Dead Test RAM Diagnostic ROM

Repairing Apple II or Apple II Plus systems can often be challenging, as diagnosing faulty logic ICs, defective RAM, or bad sockets is not straightforward. The Dead Test Switcher is an essential tool for simplifying this process.

This device is based by Adrian’s Digital Basement project, initially designed for the Commodore 64 and later adapted for the Apple II. It operates by swapping the F8 ROM with a small board, enabling quick switching between the Auto-Start Monitor and Dead Test modes. With this tool, identifying faulty components becomes much easier and more efficient.

*When combined with a logic IC tester, this tool makes nearly complete repairs of Apple II systems possible.

How to Use

  • Remove the F8 ROM and install the Dead Test Switcher board.
  • To boot into Auto-Start Monitor: Slide the switch to the right.
  • To run the Dead Test: Slide the switch to the left.
*Please note that this product cannot be used with Apple IIe, IIc, or IIgs.

About the Dead Test

The Dead Test is a highly effective diagnostic tool for identifying RAM issues. Here’s how it helps with troubleshooting:

  • If the RAM test fails: There may be issues with logic ICs or the ROM. In my experience, most failures are due to faulty logic ICs. Tools like the T48 ROM programmer or similar IC testers can be very helpful.
  • Socket connection problems: These are another common cause of failures. Performing a few measurements usually identifies the faulty socket.
  • RAM failure identification: Use the Dead Test results to pinpoint defective RAM chips.
  • Finally, complete the repair process by using Apple’s official diagnostic disk to test the ROM and keyboard.

Note:
Refer to our project page for details on identifying faulty RAM through binary conversion, as it includes a helpful table for this purpose. However, providing binary conversion assistance through chat may be challenging or impractical. *We cannot support the task.

The Dead Test Switcher is an invaluable tool for repairing and maintaining Apple II systems, offering reliable and efficient diagnostics.
